The Spirit of America

Melania kept herself busy over the past few weeks turning the White House into a Winter Wonderland. Of course, she had the help of a few volunteers.

While one may make assumptions, her decorations aren’t just for show. Melania carefully executed a theme to deck out to this holiday season: it’s called “The Spirit of America”.

Meaning Behind the Magic

“Spirit of America” is meant to pay tribute to the traditions, customs and history that Make America Great, and to recognize the individuals that have shaped it into what our country stands for today. Read on for some of the main attractions!

The East Wing is adorned with a Gold Star Tree, which recognizes the selflessness and service of American heroes. It was decorated by Gold Star families – those that have lost a loved one through active duty.

The Vermeil Room in the Ground Floor Corridor and the Library honor previous first ladies and the legacies of past presidents. Decorations include the White House Historical Association annual ornaments and historic pieces of vermeil (items made of silver that are then coated in plates of gold).

The infamous East Room has four trees flying high with gilded eagles, which represents the strength and freedom encompassed by our nation. The Blue Room holds the official White House Christmas tree – standing over 18 feet tall – and displays a paper replica of every state and territory’s floral emblem.

The gingerbread house (yes, the White House makes one too!) is held in the State Dining Room. It displays historic spots from all over the United States. Fun fact: it was crafted from 200 pounds of gingerbread dough!

Melania enjoyed the fruit of her work throughout December, but she’ll be spending the holidays with her family at their Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida.
