Social Emotional Learning

“A great afternoon at the @WhiteHouse, reconnecting with the wonderful students from West Gate Elementary school,” said Melania on her Instagram this past weekend.

Our first lady spent her Friday afternoon with Safety Patrol students from the Florida elementary school that she visited last March as part of her #BeBest campaign. Instead of visiting them again, these kids took a trip to Washington and got an official tour from FLOTUS herself! Pictured above, the students are all decked out with #BeBest gear.

Why West Gate Elementary? Along with others in its county, the school introduced a special program in 2017 that aims to prevent cyberbullying – which is one of the pillars of Melania’s campaign. Titled the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) program, it lays emphasis on the development of social and emotional skills in children (such as empathy and problem-solving together) to compliment traditional education curriculums.

When visiting in 2019, Melania said, “I believe it is important for schools to focus on the overall well-being of our youngest citizens, which will help them develop in their earliest years so that they can reach their full potential as our next generation.”

And she remains in awe of these kids today. In her Instagram post, she stated that she was “inspired by how these children are growing into the best versions of themselves.”
