Tackling the Nation’s Drug Crisis
“Finding solutions to our nation’s drug problem is something I care deeply about – especially when it comes to its negative effects on children & families,” said First Lady Melania Trump in a tweet today. “Thank you to @TheJusticeDept and AG Barr for your leadership in combating our nation’s drug crisis. #BeBest”
Melania Trump gave a keynote speech at the Department of Justice National Opioid Summit on Friday, March 6, to share the progress she’s made as part of her #BeBest program.
In 2017, President Trump declared the opioid crisis a national health emergency. The first lady launched her #BeBest campaign in 2018, making opioid abuse one of the three pillars she chose to tackle. More specifically, the initiative brings attention to and helps educate individuals on opioid dependence, addiction, and abuse within families and in children.
Melania shared stories of her visits to hospitals and medical centers over her time as first lady, noting that “opioids have affected the lives of nearly 2.2 million children across the U.S.”
She also ensured the crowd of her commitment to her #BeBest cause, saying, “As first lady of the U.S., finding solutions to our nation’s drug problem is something I care deeply about, especially when it comes to its negative effects on children and families.”
