‘Defund the police’ – a movement to introduce hell on earth

George Orwell famously wrote that some ideas are so absurd that only intellectuals could believe them. Were he alive today, at this exact moment, the bard of dystopia would surely add bubble-headed celebrities to his maxim.
Recently, reports revealed that uberwealthy “beautiful people” like Chrissy Tiegen and her husband John Legend, Steve Carrell and Seth Rogen were donating to a Minnesota group to help bail rioters out of jail, and were encouraging others to do likewise.
Now some lefty celebs — as we remain mired in the middle of widespread rioting and looting — are also enlisting in a drive to “defund” the police.
Folks like Jane Fonda, Lizzo, Legend again, Megan Rapinoe, Natalie Portman and Common have signed on with a protest effort by a group called Movement 4 Black Lives, or M4BL.
“The time has come to defund the police,” says the online open letter put forward by M4BL.
The group links black Americans who have died from police brutality, such as George Floyd, the Minneapolis man who passed away while being arrested by an officer who knelt on his neck for several minutes, to deaths of blacks from COVID-19.
“The COVID-19 deaths and the deaths caused by police terror are connected and consequential to each other” the letter states.
How?
“The United States does not have a national health care system. Instead, we have the largest military budget in the world, and some of the most well-funded and militarized police departments in the world, too. Policing and militarization overwhelmingly dominate the bulk of national and local budgets.”
“Despite continued profiling, harassment, terror and killing of Black communities, local and federal decision-makers continue to invest in the police, which leaves Black people vulnerable and our communities no safer,” M4BL continues.
“Where could that money go? It could go towards building healthy communities, to the health of our elders and children, to neighborhood infrastructure, to education, to childcare, to support a vibrant Black future. The possibilities are endless.”
The group thenis says it sides with “freedom fighters” in Minneapolis and elsewhere across the United States in calling “for the end to police terror.”
“We call for defunding of police and for those dollars to be rerouted to create a public national healthcare system,” the group concludes.
The left-wing media is all in. The Nation says defunding is “the only solution” to the factors that led to the current crisis, while Mother Jones speculates “what a world without cops would look like.”
It would look like a Hobbesian jungle — as we now see in those major cities run for decades by Democratic politicians who have ordered police officiers to stand down and let looters loot.
The problem with the inflammatory rhetoric of groups like M4BL is that it glides over critical evidence that refutes its point — such as, for example, most people killed by authorities are white.
The other thing they fail to acknowledge is that violent crime in America has reached some of the lowest levels on record, which just so happens to coincide with laws mandating tougher and longer sentences that keep criminals off the streets, and with the explosion in gun sales, as people have increasingly felt responsible for their own safety.
You want more chaos and mayhem in the streets, moving toward “a world without cops” will get you there. The evidence is hiding in plain sight.
