Trump Empowering Women to Enhance Peace and Prosperity Around the World

The White House released new plans on Thursday to enhance the safety, leadership, and meaningful participation of women in political and civil life worldwide.

“Nations that empower women are much wealthier, safer, and much more politically stable,” said President Trump in a White House release.

Secretary of State Mike Pompeo posted a tweet outlining the success, saying, “Women are on the frontlines of building peace around the world, Strengthening their participation in peace processes prevents conflict and promotes global security.”

The plans released Thursday outline steps the Federal Government is taking to enhance women’s role in preventing, resolving, and recovering from conflict. They include:

  • The Department of State modernizing its foreign policy and assistance tools to enhance policies and programs to increase women’s meaningful participation in decision-making, protect against gender-based violence, and counter violent extremism.
  • The Department of Defense promoting the safety of women and girls during conflicts and crises, and improving gender equality and empowerment in the security sector.
  • USAID strengthening its work to invest in programs that promote women’s leadership and empowerment in order to break through conflicts that hinder developmental progress and threaten global security.
  • The Department of Homeland Security working to support the Department of State and USAID in implementing their internationally focused strategies, in addition to other measures.

The implementation of the plans demonstrates the Trump Administration’s strong commitment to remain at the forefront of the effort to advance the role of women in political, civic, and economic life around the world.

Senior adviser Ivanka Trump shared the White House press release to her Twitter Thursday with additional information regarding the administration’s plans.

President Trump signed the Women, Peace, and Security Act during his first year in office. Last year, he launched the Women’s Global Development and Prosperity Initiative, the first whole-of-government approach toward advancing women’s economic empowerment.

Women leaders in the Trump Administration currently include the Secretaries of Education, Transportation, and Homeland Security, as well as the first woman to head the Central Intelligence Agency.
