UPDATE: Defense Secretary Gates draws fire for remarks on China
A former Pentagon official who worked under Secretary of Defense Robert Gates expressed outrage over remarks made by Gates on Fox News Channel:
“Gates is obviously a liar and was fully aware of the growing PRC threat on his watch,” said the former official in an exclusive interview with American Wire.
The former Secretary of Defense appeared on Special Report with Bret Baier Wednesday and expressed regrets about decades of U.S. policy and China:
“I think we made two big strategic mistakes when it comes to China. Our policy toward China for the past forty years has been underpinned by the assumption that a richer China would become a freer China and it has become crystal clear, especially under President Xi, that assumption was wrong,” Gates said.
Gates also indicated that it was a relatively new understanding that China might have hostile intentions regarding the United States:
“The second was the failure to understand that a richer China would become a more assertive China. And so I think it’s only been the last three or four years that people have begun to realize that this is a regime that we are going to be in a contest with for as far into the future as we can see.”
The former Pentagon official, who requested that he/she not be identified, said Gates had been repeatedly warned for decades about the threat posed by the People’s Republic of China, but failed to act on that advice:
“In the case of Gates and China, it is a complete lie as warnings were coming fast and furious from throughout the intelligence community and within the Defense Department — all of which [Gates] ignored.”
The former official suggests that Gates was not the only official who got things wrong regarding China:
“He is one in a long line of political appointees who pursued their own agenda when entrusted with a high government position, ignoring warnings, facts, and intelligence on a routine basis and now deny responsibility as the consequences of their mismanagement begins to manifest itself.”
Gates served as Secretary of Defense from 2006 until 2011. He was originally appointed by President George W. Bush and continued to serve under President Barack Obama.
