GOP threatens to punish those defacing American monuments, statues
The GOP, taking a cue from President Trump, is vowing to get tough on violent, progressive political activists who deface American monuments in the guise of protesting racial injustice.
“We cannot tolerate mob rule, and we cannot allow it to go unpunished,” said Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AK). “While local authorities would usually take the lead in prosecuting these crimes, unfortunately, many of them seem unwilling to stand up to the mob and uphold the rule of law. Therefore, I call upon the Department of Justice to bring charges against these mob vigilantes, prosecuting them to the fullest extent of the law.”
President Trump warned radical progressives earlier this month that vandalism of American monuments carried a ten-year prison term under federal law. The threat is ominous because there is no parole system in the Federal prison system.
Trump reiterated the threat later in the week, saying he was asking federal law enforcement officers to be proactive, looking for cases that may have happened previously.
“This action is taken effective immediately,” Trump tweeted, “but may also be used retroactively for destruction or vandalism already caused. There will be no exceptions!”
PBS’s Yamiche Alcindor says that Trump will issue an executive order to put teeth into the law.
“President Trump says he plans to sign an executive order on statues,” says Alcindor. “Reports say the executive order will be allowing for the immediate arrest of people who deface or remove federal statues.”
Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), went even further, saying that, not only must Americans punish the vandals with prison, but we must also reject their ideology.
“From the crazy professor no one took seriously to the nut-job running for office with no chance of winning, they have operated on the fringes of our politics for decades,” Rubio said. “And now they are denigrating a legitimate movement to force their madness even further into the mainstream.
“Because if it’s OK for a violent mob to tear down a statue, then what is to stop another violent mob from showing up to defend it? If it’s OK to set a police car on fire, what’s going to stop someone upset at activist judges from burning down a courtroom?” Rubio concluded.
Nothing but prison.
Some progressive political activists already are threatening to blow up Mt. Rushmore, while St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York has also been targeted with profane graffiti.
