Trump administration says they’ll veto D.C. statehood bill
With the U.S. House of Representatives set to vote this week on a bill to make Washington, D.C. the nation’s 51st state, the Trump administration is waving the veto pen at Capitol Hill.
The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) released a statement saying that the legislation is unconstitutional. The OMB said that if the bill manages to pass both houses of Congress, they would advise the president to veto it.
“If, as H.R. 51 proposes, the District were reduced to a small jurisdiction made up of essentially only Federal buildings, the 23rd Amendment would give the tiny population of individuals living within those borders the same voting power in the Electoral College as the smallest state in the country,” the statement said.
The House is scheduled to vote on the issue this Friday for the first time since 1993. There is little doubt that it will pass the Democrat-controlled chamber.
Trump is completely opposed to allowing the capital city to become a state. He has said that Republicans would be very stupid to allow the extremely Democrat city to become a state and allow them two Democrat senators.
The bill’s lead supporter, Delegate Eleanor Holmes Norton, represents D.C. in the House as a nonvoting member. She says that her city has more than 700,000 residents which is more than the entire state of Wyoming.
“On Friday, the House will make history when it passes my #DCStatehood bill. Neither chamber has passed the DC statehood bill in DC’s 219-year history. This is the beginning of the end of taxation without representation and the start of consent of the governed for DC residents,” tweeted Holmes Norton.
The OMB said that the framers had a major concern that the power of statehood would grant outsized authority in comparison to other states since all federal powers would be under the control of a single state.
“WH threatens to veto Democrats’ #DCStatehood bill: “The constitutional vision of our Framers for our capital was sound. We should not seek to undermine that vision through unconstitutional means,” said the GOP members of the House Oversight Committee on Twitter.
The issue of D.C. statehood gained momentum during the recent George Floyd protests in the nation’s capital when Trump found himself at odds with D.C. officials. The city did not agree with his move to call in the national guard to help control protests.
The veto is unlikely to take place since the bill is not expected to pass the Senate.
