Obama sides with China on virus
A week after President Trump called the COVID-19 virus “Kung flu,” former President Barack Obama condemned the term saying it “pisses [him] off,” during an invite-only Zoom fundraiser for presumed Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden.
“I don’t want a country in which the president of the United States is actively trying to promote anti-Asian sentiment and thinks it’s funny. I don’t want that. That still shocks and pisses me off,” the ex-president told his progressive acolytes according to the New York Times.
Trump has often called the COVID-19 virus by a moniker that helps highlight the fact that it comes from China, such as the China flu or Kung flu.
“COVID-19 … I said that’s an odd name. I could give you many, many names. Some people call it the Chinese flu, the China flu, right?” Trump said last week in Arizona.
China has been engaged in an ongoing effort to obscure its role in allowing the virus to spread throughout the world and effort that has received the Democrats’ help.
“More than anything, this pandemic has fully, finally torn back the curtain on the idea that so many of the folks in charge know what they’re doing,” Obama said in a commencement address to college graduates in May — criticism aimed at the Trump administration.
But the White House says that the reason for Trump rhetoric is clear: The virus was caused by the cover-up of Chinese officials, first in Wuhan, and then in the rest of the country — and no one should forget it.
“My reaction is that the president has made very clear that he wants everybody to understand, and I think many Americans do understand, that the virus originated in China,” a top adviser to the president, Kellyanne Conway said last week.
Obama and Joe Biden have yet to condemn China’s role in causing the pandemic. When he was president, Obama called the U.S. relationship with China “the most important bilateral relationship of the 21st Century.”
“If President Obama had lived his life not in the United States but in China, as a Christian, a community organizer, a civil rights lawyer, a constitutional law professor … he would not be enjoying a grand fete with Xi Jinping,” said Sen. Tom Cotton, a Republican from Arkansas according to the South China Morning Post.
“President Obama most likely would be in prison or much, much worse.”
