Crime soars as NYC cuts $1 billion from police budget
Yesterday, The New York City Council voted to slash $1 billion from the city’s $11 billion budget for police under a proposal put forth by Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“The cuts — a combination of trimming fat and shifting resources away from cops in response to calls to defund the NYPD in the wake of George Floyd’s killing in Minneapolis — include canceling the July Police Academy class, reducing overtime by $352 million and scrapping plans for a new 116th Precinct station house in Queens, de Blasio said,” reports the New York Post.
New York has seen a recent uptick in shootings, and some say the cuts won’t make the city any safer. And many argue that the cuts will impact Black communities the most.
“Shootings more than doubled again last week. Even right now, the NYPD doesn’t have enough manpower to shift cops to one neighborhood without making another neighborhood less safe,” said Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Lynch.
Cops point to the shooting of high school basketball star Brandon Hendricks, 17, who had just graduated and was weighing several NCAA division I scholarships when he was shot to death outside of an apartment last week, as an example of how the community will suffer from the cuts.
“Look at the kid who was just killed, the basketball player,” said one anonymous source to the New York Post. “There’s no marching for him. De Blasio’s not even discussing it.”
“They’re running a lawless society and they’re defunding the police department,” the source said. “He’s showing where his loyalties are — with the criminals.”
For some, like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (NY-14), the cuts to the police don’t go far enough. The congresswomen from New York called the budget cuts “budget tricks or funny math,” and said that the city should fully defund the police.
“Defunding police means defunding police,” Ocasio-Cortez said in a statement.
President Trump, however, slammed the budget cuts, saying it will further alienate police from the citizens after months of anti-cop rhetoric from politicians, especially in New York.
“NYC is cutting Police $’s by ONE BILLION DOLLARS, and yet the @NYCMayor is going to paint a big, expensive, yellow Black Lives Matter sign on Fifth Avenue, denigrating this luxury Avenue. This will further antagonize New York’s Finest, who LOVE New York…” tweeted the president.
The country has seen a wave of defunding proposals as a result of the death of George Floyd.
The Minneapolis City Council has voted to essentially dismantle its police. In Los Angeles, the city has slashed funding for school police by 35 percent. Seattle, St. Louis and Oklahoma City are also considering measures from police budget cuts to the total abolition of police forces.
