Tammy Duckworth takes aim at Tucker Carlson and Trump campaign
Illinois Sen. Tammy Duckworth (D), who is a possible vice-presidential candidate, sharply criticized Fox News host Tucker Carlson and President Donald Trump’s campaign in a New York Times op-ed.
“Donald Trump and Tucker Carlson should know that attacks from self-serving, insecure men who can’t tell the difference between true patriotism and hateful nationalism will never diminish my love for this country — or my willingness to sacrifice for it so they don’t have to. These titanium legs don’t buckle,” wrote Duckworth.
The op-ed comes after both Carlson and President Trump took issue with Duckworth calling for a national dialogue on potentially removing statues of George Washington. Carlson said Duckworth must hate America while the Trump campaign issued a statement accusing her of using her military service to deflect from her support for the left-wing campaign to villainize America’s founding.
“We have every right to fight to preserve our nation, and our heritage and our culture,” Carlson said. “And when vandals like Tammy Duckworth and Ilhan Omar tell us that we’re not allowed to question their patriotism, even as they scream about how horrible America is, we have every right to laugh in their faces.”
Duckworth is a double amputee and Iraq War veteran. She wrote that she doesn’t want George Washington’s statue pulled down any more than she wants the Purple Heart that he established ripped from her chest.
“But while I would risk my own safety to protect a statue of his from harm, I’ll fight to my last breath to defend every American’s freedom to have his or her own opinion about Washington’s flawed history,” she wrote.
The Illinois senator went on to say that it’s better for Trump’s campaign to distract Americans which questioning her patriotism instead of keeping them focused on the more than 130,000 Americans killed by the coronavirus.
“It’s better for his campaign to distract Americans with whether a combat veteran is sufficiently patriotic than for people to recall that this failed commander in chief has still apparently done nothing about reports of Russia putting bounties on the heads of American troops in Afghanistan.”
Several on the left have been pushing for Democratic nominee Joe Biden to select Duckworth as his running mate saying she’s a female minority that also brings military experience to the ticket. Biden is set to announce his running mate next month.
