Mayor de Blasio panders to BLM on protests, helped by federal researchers
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio has banned all public parades and festivals through at least September but told CNN that Black Lives Matter (BLM) demonstrations have to go on.
“This is a historic moment of change. We have to respect that but also say to people the kinds of gatherings we’re used to, the parades, the fairs — we just can’t have that while we’re focusing on health right now,” de Blasio told CNN host Wolf Blitzer, when asked about BLM protests, according to the New York Post.
Big city, liberal mayors, like de Blasio, are hiding behind a study published by the National Bureau of Economic Research that claims that BLM protests did not help reignite the spread of the coronavirus in 315 cities studied by the authors, despite marchers in close contact with each other in the streets.
Yet, a simple look at two main BLM protest states make the study hard to believe.
Washington State, the home to the Capitol Hill Autonomous Zone in Seattle, which saw large-scale, violent protests, reported 204 COVID cases on June 1 and nearly 1,100 cases on July 5, a five-fold increase.
Similarly, Minnesota reported a seven-day average of cases at 8,041 on June 1, and 12,391 on July 5, a more-than 50 percent increase.
In the meantime, the media has widely reported that a “spike” in COVID positive test results is a consequence of a one-day rally in Tulsa that President Trump had in the city.
Mayor de Blasio is floundering badly, with shootings and violent crime going up in the city as he and the city council have removed a billion dollars from the city’s police budget while suspending the city’s anti-crime task force.
The mayor has been criticized for attending to things like painting Black Lives Matter murals on 5th Avenue, even as the city struggles to get back to normal after the lengthy COVID shutdown that hit New York the hardest outside of China.
“If you’re Jewish, Mayor Bill De Blasio will arrest you and throw you in prison for gathering with your family,” says Benny Johnson at Turning Point USA.
“If you’re Al Sharpton (a rabid, proven antisemite) De Blasio will let everyone take their masks off and scream in each other’s faces.”
The New York Post reports that a “couple of angry onlookers [were] shouting ‘douchebag de Blasio’ upon his arrival,” at the mural painting.
One lady, says the Post, countered the chants of “Black lives matter” with “Hitler told us all lives didn’t matter, too!”
It’s a scene that is increasingly common, as de Blasio ignores the needs of ordinary New Yorkers so he can pander to his ultra-progressive base.
