CO’s Dem Gov: Anti-maskers are ‘selfish bastards’

Colorado Gov. Jared Polis (D), who has refused to institute an unpopular, statewide mask requirement, has instead hurled juvenile insults at those who don’t wish to wear a mask, say some Colorado conservatives who are angry with the governor for recent remarks.

In comments that were meant to pander to his base– who often respond to foul-language– Polis said on his Facebook campaign account:

“The emerging scientific data is clear: wearing a mask doesn’t only protect others, it also significantly reduces your own risk of getting Coronavirus. So if you’re a selfish bastard and wearing a mask to protect others isn’t enough of a reason to do so, then maybe protecting yourself is?”

Polis’s comments immediately made him front page news on liberal sites like Newsweek, and a darling among the local liberal media.

However, 1-in-13 people in the U.S. have asthma and might have difficulty breathing when wearing a mask. Others have lung problems that make breathing difficult.

“Until you can’t breathe then it sucks,” retorted Colorado House Minority Leader, Patrick Neville (R).

Neville has diminished lung capacity from serving in the military in Iraq and he says Polis knows this. But that didn’t stop Polis from reiterating that Neville should wear a mask.

“For those with diminished lung capacity who are at greater risk from this virus, wearing a mask is even more important,” tweeted Polis.

Polis has steadfastly refused to order statewide mask mandate, allowing some to question if he’s really serious about the benefits of a mask-wearing or just playing politics to pander to his base and avoiding the fight that would accompany such an order.

While the “emerging scientific data” may be clear, it’s not like it’s based on years of experience. Also, much of the data is meant only for a health care setting.

“We know that wearing a mask outside health care facilities offers little, if any, protection from infection,” said the New England Journal of Medicine in May.  “In many cases, the desire for widespread masking is a reflexive reaction to anxiety over the pandemic.”

It’s also becoming a reflexive reaction by a government that wants to control every aspect of the world and needs to find a whipping boy because it fails to control itself.
