Big Tech censors popular Breitbart COVID video over hydroxychloroquine as research languishes
A viral video that addresses disinformation from establishment figures in the battle against the novel coronavirus was deleted by Big Tech this week, after accumulating 17 million views in just eight hours.
The video, hosted by the news outlet Breitbart, featured a press conference outside of the U.S. Supreme Court by a group called America’s Front Line Doctors and showed “Rep. Ralph Norman (R-SC) and frontline doctors sharing their views and opinions on coronavirus and the medical response to the pandemic.”
Facebook, YouTube and Twitter all deleted the video.
Specifically, Facebook said it objected to the touting of hydroxychloroquine as a treatment for COVID-19.
“Yes, we removed it for sharing false information about cures and treatments for COVID-19,” said Andy Stone of Facebook, who previously worked for Democrat Sen. Barbara Boxer (CA) and the Democrat Congressional Campaign Committee.
Hydroxychloroquine has shown to be effective in the treatment of COVID-19, despite misinformation that clinical trials show it has no value in treating the virus.
“In a large-scale retrospective analysis of 2,541 patients hospitalized between March 10 and May 2, 2020 across the system’s six hospitals,” reported Henry Ford Health Care Systems of Detroit on July 2, “the study found 13% of those treated with hydroxychloroquine alone died compared to 26.4% not treated with hydroxychloroquine.”
The study screened and monitored the patients for a heart condition that has been wrongly associated with adverse effects in previous studies of hydroxychloroquine.
The biggest problem with hydroxychloroquine is that researchers can’t find enough volunteers to do a large enough double-blind clinical trial because a previous study, which was later withdrawn, said that hydroxychloroquine was dangerous for the heart. The Lancet and The New England Journal of Medicine (NEJM) both were forced to retract the study after the authors would not allow others to review their data.
“It was a real scandal,” said Nicholas White, a physician and tropical diseases researcher at Mahidol University in Salaya, Thailand and the University of Oxford, UK.
“White says it has become more difficult to recruit participants to the trial due to the way the drug has been framed by the media and others,” reports the Royal Society of Chemistry.
Most studies so far have had less than 100 participants, whereas researchers need hundreds of thousands of volunteers to do a proper study.
America’s Frontline Doctors warned against allowing “so-called experts and media personalities” to make decisions for ordinary Americans, who are being constantly badgered and kept in fear by the government.
The video also disputed the value of face masks in preventing transmission of COVID-19.
Most importantly says Dr. Simone Gold, a board-certified doctor and founder of America’s Frontline Doctors, is that the misinformation about COVID has “normalized people screaming obscenities at each other while hiking” over something as minute as wearing a cloth or paper mask.
“The Covid virus was supposed to be contained in the kind of lab where people wear astronaut suits and go through triple sealed doors. It is a con of massive proportion to assert that now, having escaped those environs, a bandana will magically do the trick,” writes Gold about the mask debate.
At issue is the ability to cut down on the lethality of the coronavirus short of keeping people locked up in their homes, terrified to go to work and school. The overweening mandates from the government have people anxious and afraid.
The worries aren’t just an expression of distrust of government either.
Trust of social media companies by ordinary Americans also continues to plummet according to research surveys, even as they try to act as gatekeepers for America’s doctors.
“Overall, 72% of U.S. adults say social media companies have too much power and influence in politics today, according to the June 16-22 survey,” says the Pew Research Center.
All go to show that a pandemic isn’t the best time to allow the media and government to dictate health care options above the heads of doctors.
