Trump on Biden considering Kamala Harris for VP: ‘Would be a fine choice’

President Donald Trump weighed in on Democrat nominee Joe Biden considering California Sen. Kamala Harris (D) to join his ticket as the vice-presidential nominee.

Trump was asked by reporters what he thought of Biden’s consideration of Harris.

“I think it’d be a fine choice, Kamala Harris, she’d be a fine choice” Trump responded.

Harris, who also ran for the presidential nomination, has resurfaced as one of the top contenders for the VP slot after the Associated Press captured a photograph of Biden’s notes at a press conference. They contained clear talking points on Harris such as: “Do not hold grudges,” “Campaigned with me & Jill,” and “Great respect for her.”

The former vice president is expected to make his VP announcement the first week of August just ahead of his party’s national convention.

Harris famously went after Biden during the primary on the debate stage criticizing him for his opposition several decades ago to federally mandated school busing. The move resulted in a strong rebuttal by Biden who served under the first African American president and also has very strong support amongst African American voters. Biden said Harris’ comments were a mischaracterization of his position.

Former Connecticut Sen. Chris Dodd who is heading up Biden’s VP selection committee has reportedly not forgiven Harris for the debate exchange. Politico recently reported that Dodd doesn’t feel Harris hasn’t expressed regret for the accusation and was only trying to boost her campaign ratings.

Biden and Harris improved their relationship after she suspended her White House bid. The former vice president has praised her often and claims he’s thought very highly of her since she was a friend of his late son who also served as an attorney general.

Harris endorsed Biden in March.

“I believe in Joe. I believe in Joe,” she said. “I know Joe. And that’s why I’m supporting him.”

Since then, Harris has headlined a number of virtual events and fundraisers for Biden while the coronavirus has suspended in-person campaign functions.

It is already public knowledge that Biden will be selecting a female running mate but with the current riots and racial divide in the country many Democrats are also putting pressure on the Biden campaign to select a woman of color.

Harris is one of several other African American women under consideration such as Atlanta Mayor Keesha Lance-Bottoms, and Congresswoman Karen Bass.
