Rashida Tlaib, other progressives, refuse to endorse Biden for president
In an interview with Newsweek, Michigan Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D) reused to outwardly endorse presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.
“My constituents don’t need to be bogged down in, ‘Is he the best candidate?’” she told Newsweek of her failure to endorse Biden. “That’s not what you have to convince my residents.”
“Residents come up to me and say, ‘Rashida, I don’t know. I hear Joe Biden this, Joe Biden that.’ I say, ‘Listen, do we need another four years of Trump? No. Then what I need you to do is go out there and focus on that,’” the Muslim congresswoman said.
The refusal of a prominent progressive to get behind Biden, just weeks away from the Democrat National Convention in Milwaukee where he hopes to unify Democrats for his candidacy, could spell trouble for Biden in the fall.
Perceived as too moderate for a Democrat Party that is openly professing socialism, Biden has publicly taken heat from prominent progressives, including operatives of his biggest challenger in the Democrat Party, Bernie Sanders.
“It’s like saying to somebody, ‘You have a bowl of s–t in front of you, and all you’ve got to do is eat half of it instead of the whole thing.’ It’s still s–t,” former progressive Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders co-chair, Nina Turner, told The Atlantic about supporting Biden.
Last week, progressives represented by Turner clashed with more establishment figures like former Rep. Barney Frank (MA), in meetings ahead of the convention meant to hash out convention rules and the Democrat platform.
“At a virtual gathering of a key committee for the Democratic National Convention, Bernie Sanders-allied members said Joe Biden appointees called them ‘children’ and made other rude comments in a breakout room where they were talking privately,” reported Politico about the dustup.
Turner called pro-Biden Democrats “Disgusting, disturbing, unacceptable.”
President Trump is hoping to capitalize on the rupture between the progressives and the Biden camp.
“Last time I got a lot of Bernie Sanders voters, as you know, a very good percentage. People were shocked, mostly because of trade,” said Trump, according to the New York Post.
“One thing Bernie was right on was trade. He said that everybody in this country is being hurt badly by our trade deals. They’re so bad. And I get a lot of support from Bernie Sanders [supporters]. I think I’m going to have it again this time.”
The tension between the Biden camp and the Sanders supporters mirrors tensions between moderates and progressives in the party that is clashing behind the scenes on protests, defunding police, health care and social other issues.
Politico warns Democrats today that nearly 400 Democrat delegates to the convention have pledged to revolt if the party doesn’t support “Medicare For All” at the convention.
“The warning is all but certain to set up a clash between Sanders’ most dedicated supporters and presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden, who opposes Medicare for All, at a time when the party is seeking to demonstrate unity ahead of its August convention,” says Politico.
