Portland cops ID beating suspect, accuse public of ‘tampering with evidence’ in case
The Portland Police Bureau (PPB) has publically identified the man they suspect was seen in a video kicking a man unconscious at Black Lives Matter (BLM) protests on Sunday and say that they have started a massive manhunt for him more than 72 hours after the incident took place.
Police cite phone messages left for the suspect as part of their dragnet.
The suspect, Marquise Love, 25, has been a local fixture at BLM protests and was seen in the video wearing a black shirt with the word “security” on it. The company that provides some security for the protests denies Lee works for them, saying he failed a background check when he lied on his application.
“A social media account apparently connected to Love has been disabled and efforts to locate him for comment were not immediately successful,” reports the Washington Examiner.
In a press statement, police urged members of the public to stop looking for Love. The public has been outraged with both the crime itself and with the lack of police response. Some have vowed to find and punish Love if the police won’t.
“PPB Investigators have been made aware of attempts by members of the public to contact Love after possible personal information was posted online,” said the statement. “Investigators urge the public to not do this as it can be dangerous. Also, the information circulating on social media is not always accurate.
“Investigators have left messages for Love to turn himself in but will continue to look for him as there is probable cause for his arrest.”
PPB Chief Lovell, in the statement, said that the Portland Police take the case “extremely seriously… but we need more than just videos from social media.”
He then accused members of the public of “tampering with evidence” apparently by posting such videos to social media sites.
“In order to hold individuals responsible for criminal acts, we need the public to provide information and refrain from tampering with evidence,” he concluded.
The incident began as the victim apparently was helping a transgendered woman who was being assaulted and robbed. BLM protesters then attacked the victim, who tried to flee in his pick-up truck but crashed.
Video shows the man subsequently dazed, sitting on the ground, when the alleged suspect runs around protesters and delivers a hard kick to the side of the victim’s head who falls over unconscious.
Previously, there were rumors that victim died, but police now say that rumors are untrue.
The victim is at home, continuing to recover, say police.
“Police said they have not yet been able to identify the transgender woman who may have been robbed,” says the U.K.’s Daily Mail. “Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Detective Brent Christensen at 503-823-2087 or at Brent.Christensen@portlandoregon.gov.”
