China TV shows protesters marching to occupy Portland mayor’s house as Trump fires back
China’s state TV, CGTV, is showing scenes of violent protesters in Portland chanting “Black Lives Matter,” while the Chinese TV giant says they were marching to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler’s house on Monday. Reports from the city say protestors have been trying to occupy Wheeler’s condo for a week.
“Protests continued in Portland on Monday evening,” says CGTV in a video titled Protesters march toward mayor’s house in Portland. “The U.S. city is approaching 100 consecutive nights of Black Lives Matter demonstrations. Scores of people took to the streets, setting fire to a bench and chanting Black Lives Matter.”
Mayor Wheeler and President Donald Trump have been squabbling via the media, with Trump blaming Wheeler for acting weak against protesters who have shut down much of downtown Portland for over three months, and Wheeler, who claims the protests are all “Trump’s fault.”
“Your campaign of fear is as anti-democratic as anything that you’ve done to create hate and vitriol in our beautiful country,” said Wheeler to Trump via a press conference on Sunday according to MarketWatch. “You’ve tried to divide us more than any other figure in modern history. And now you want me to stop the violence that you helped create.”
Wheeler, in fact, has done little to stem the tide of violent protest in his city that has little to do with Trump and thus he’s been reviled by all sides in the conflict.
Leftists and Antifa activists are calling upon Wheeler to resign.
“We just don’t believe Mayor Wheeler should be on the ballot or in the position of being mayor right now,” said Bobbin Singh, the executive director of the Oregon Justice Resource Center according to local KATU.
Wheeler showed his irresolution as a mayor by responding to calls for him to resign with a certain ambiguity.
“Wheeler said he would work with anyone,” reports KATU, “including those calling for his resignation, to bring about a peaceful end to what’s happening in Portland.” He just won’t ask the police to put an end to the violence.
President Trump responded to Wheeler’s comments blaming the President for the violence by calling Wheeler “the wacky Radical Left Do Nothing Democrat Mayor of Portland” and a “fool.”
“The people of Portland,” tweeted Trump, “like all other cities & parts of our great Country, want Law & Order. The Radical Left Democrat Mayors, like the dummy running Portland, or the guy right now in his basement unwilling to lead or even speak out against crime, will never be able to do it!”
Trump’s reference to “the guy … in his basement” was a shot at Democrat presidential candidate Joe Biden, who has been missing-in-action for most of the Summer of Violence in Portland and elsewhere.
Wheeler later seemed to reflect that perhaps getting into a Twitter match with Trump, who seems to have to the biggest megaphone of modern American presidents, wouldn’t end well for the mayor, so he offered this “olive branch.”
“I’d like to hear the President of the United States say he’s all in, let’s bring this great country back together,” Wheeler said. “We need to reset. I need to reset. The president needs to reset.”
And who can blame Wheeler after all?
Even the Chinese are against him.
