Kayleigh McEnany: D.C. mayor ‘ought to be ashamed’ for insults to Washington and Jefferson monuments
Washington, D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser’s committee on removing statues and monuments has drawn condemnation from White House Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany after the committee recommended removing or adding “context” to both the Washington Monument and the Jefferson Memorial along with over 150 monuments of “concern.”
“By publishing a plan that recommends potentially removing the Washington Monument, Christopher Columbus Statue, Andrew Jackson Statue, and Jefferson Memorial — among many other ludicrous recommendations — the radically liberal mayor of Washington, D.C. is repeating the same left-wing narrative used to incite dangerous riots: demolishing our history and destroying our great heritage,” said McEnany according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail.
“She ought to be ashamed for even suggesting them for consideration,” McEnany said.
Bowser’s committee, called DCFACES — and satirized on the right as DEFACES– was formed in July to exploit the race riots that have seen radical socialists pull down American monuments in cities across the country in an effort to degrade American heroes.
“This July, I tasked the DCFACES Working Group with evaluating public spaces to ensure the namesake’s legacy is consistent with #DCValues,” said Bowser. “They have delivered the report, and I look forward to reviewing and advancing their recommendations.”
Some conservatives weren’t even outraged by the report because it’s exactly what they have come to expect from the Democrats in D.C.
“Yep, you read it correctly: D.C. committee recommends stripping the names of Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin, Francis Scott Key and others from city government buildings,” said Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX).
Sen. Tom Cotton, however, correctly identified the fly-in-ointment problem with the progressive plan to move or otherwise cancel American monuments. The city of Washington, D.C. doesn’t actually own the monuments.
“Hey D.C.,” he tweeted, “they’re not your monuments to rename or remove. They’re America’s monuments.”
Interior Secretary David Bernhardt, who is responsible for managing the monuments, rejected the changes outright, saying “Not on my watch. Never going to happen,” according to Fox News.
Bowser has been engaged in a kind of guerilla war, helping anarchists and Antifa activists demonstrate in D.C., making the downtown areas into a kind of ghost town where normal people fear to tread. Bowser, like other Democrat mayors, has refused to charge rioters but instead let them go to riot again.
Riots over the weekend saw five arrested, and five officers hurt in D.C.
“According to D.C. police, the people arrested were intentionally setting fires, lighting fireworks and throwing objects such as glass, bricks and smoke grenades at officers in the area. Authorities said that rioters also used lasers to visually impair officers,” reports local WTOP.
“A total of 527 people have now been arrested and charged for riotous behavior since the District starting tracking those crimes on May 30,” says WTOP.
Conservative social media users have warned people to stay out of the Washington, D.C. downtown area.
