New Academic Report: Socialist militias are arming for revolution
Emboldened by Democrat Party encouragement and media lionization, socialist militias are growing in popularity, stockpiling weapons and preparing for revolution, a new study finds.
A group of self-described “working class white” people, who are heavily armed and calling for an overthrow of the U.S. government, would typically be labeled a dangerous right-wing militia. Such a group would be prominently featured in news reports and used in Democrat Party campaign advertising to frighten voters. The group would likely be listed as a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center.
However, news coverage is scarce when it comes to “Redneck Revolt” and the “John Brown Gun Club” despite its large national footprint and involvement in violent rioting and militant attacks on government property. The lack of mainstream media interest could be because these armed revolutionaries have more in common with the Democrat Party and media objectives than other so-called “militias.”
The “John Brown Gun Club,” which is what some chapters of “Redneck Revolt” prefer to call themselves, is named for the militant abolitionist, John Brown, explains the group’s website:
“Redneck Revolt is a national network of community defense projects from a broad spread of political, religious, and cultural backgrounds. It is a pro-worker, anti-racist organization that focuses on working class liberation from the oppressive systems which dominate our lives. In states where it is legal to practice armed community defense, many branches choose to become John Brown Gun Clubs, training ourselves and our communities in defense and mutual aid.”
The word “Redneck” seems misplaced for a left-wing organization by modern uses of the word, but it is likely an ironic reappropriation of the term usually identified with southern, confederate-minded gun owners.
The group’s seemingly low-profile is not for lack of effort. Its website states, “Redneck Revolt currently has 45+ branches in 30+ states.” It has been active in many Antifa-coordinated protests and one of its members, Willem van Spronsen, was shot by police in an assault on a Tacoma, Washington immigrant detention facility in July of 2019. While most media downplayed the dangerous attack, National Public Radio romanticized the event in a moving tribute one year later:
“Van Spronsen’s belief in militancy to fight injustice showed up in his song lyrics and street protests. Eventually, friends say, it shaped what they call his ‘final action,’ which began around 4 a.m. that July 13. Armed with a semiautomatic rifle, authorities say, van Spronsen crept onto the ground of a sprawling immigration jail, set his car on fire, tossed Molotov cocktails and died in a hail of police bullets.”
Others do not see Redneck Revolt quite as romantic. A new study, “Contagion and Ideology Report,” presented by the Miller Center for Community Protection and Resilience at Rutgers University, refers to groups such as Redneck Revolt, Antifa, John Brown Gun Club, and a host of others, as “anarcho-socialist extremists.”
The group is made up of academics and though they call their findings “preliminary” and recommend more investigation, the study produced evidence that contradicts the “peaceful protester” narrative of Democrats and the media.
“We find evidence that violent anarcho-socialist networks played an active online role in preparing for and coordinating real-world riots nation-wide and in real time,” the report states.
Other narrative-shattering evidence shows a movement growing quickly and attracting extremists through the internet.
“An online structure supporting anarcho-socialist extremism appears to be rapidly growing… Extreme anarcho-socialist fringe online forums on Reddit underwent growth in membership and participation during the quarantine and recent social justice protests.”
Law enforcement authorities appear to be the focus of left-wing militia activity says the report:
“The appearance of posts with anti-police outrage and/or memes and coded language increased over 1,000% on Twitter and 300% on Reddit in recent months during social justice protests… Extreme anarcho-socialist fringe online forums on Reddit use memes calling for the death of police and memes for stockpiling munitions to promote violent revolution.”
As the militant groups expand, the report indicates nationwide protests could grow into a much larger problem – including attempts at a revolution:
“Anarcho-socialist militias which explicitly glorify Martyr narratives, classic authoritarian narratives, and revolutionary narratives are now formally organizing—and are growing.”
Additionally, the report discovered that the armed socialist militias were coordinating with “peaceful protesters” and integrating strategies:
“We find evidence that both militia and anarchist networks play key roles in the recent social justice protests from controlling perimeters at CHAZ [CHOP] to coordinating nation-wide anarchist-inspired violent protests online.”
The study concludes with an ominous prediction:
“While this report is suggestive rather than conclusive, these data hint that insurgent behavior, stochastic terror and even attacks on vital infrastructure may be fomenting, and even indicate the possibility of a mass-casualty event.”
