GOP star Elise Stefanik lends influence to Trump reelection

It appears that Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-NY) is cruising to reelection in New York’s 21st congressional district this year, in part by leading the charge for the reelection of President Donald Trump.

The district has been Trump country since 2016, after several decades under the sway of Democrats.

“It has swung very much to the right and it is a conservative Republican place,” Alexander Cohen, Assistant Professor of Political Science at Clarkson University told local ABC News WWNY.

“That’s a place where someone like Representative Stefanik can be very much at home.”

Trump won 54 percent of the district’s votes in 2016, while Stefanik tallied 56 percent of the vote in her 2018 reelection bid. This cycle marks the third time Stefanik has been up for reelection.

“Congresswoman Stefanik has never been in a stronger position for a decisive re-election victory due to her wide support from Republicans, Democrats, and Independents,” Alex DeGrasse, senior campaign strategist said in an emailed statement to 7 News.

Stefanik has been in a unique position to defend Trump as a member of Congress, serving on the House Intelligence Committee and on the House Armed Services Committee, a rare honor for someone so young.

“She’s a nationally recognized political figure and in many ways, a female face of the pro-Trump wing of the Republican Party,” said Cohen.

In 2016, she approached the election with a bit more caution but was named a member of Trump’s impeachment defense in the House earlier this year as a mark of Trump’s confidence in her.

“I was proud to lead the effort standing up for the Constitution, President Trump, and most importantly the American people. This attack was not just on the president, it was an attack on you — your voice and your vote,” she said in a speech to the RNC.

The confidence goes both ways.

Stefanik is convinced that Trump must be reelected in order to stop “the far-left failed policies” of Joe Biden.

“Now, Stefanik, 36, who has emerged as one of the president’s most fervent supporters on Capitol Hill, snatched a prime speaking-slot for this year’s RNC. She railed against Democrats in her support for Trump,” says USA Today, “saying the ‘American people were not swayed by these partisan attacks. Our support for President Trump is stronger than ever before.’”

“We understand that this election is a choice between the far-left Democratic Socialist agenda versus protecting and preserving the American Dream,” Stefanik added.
