Biden won’t release list of possible Supreme Court nominees

Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden says that he will not release a list of potential Supreme Court nominees before the election. Biden laid out three reasons why he wouldn’t make such a list.

“First, putting a judge’s name on a list like that could influence that person’s decision making as a judge, and that would be wrong,” Biden said.

“Second, anyone put on a list like that under these circumstances will be subject to unrelenting political attacks because any nominee I would select would not get a hearing until 2021 at the earliest. She would endure those attacks for months on end without being able to defend herself.

“And thirdly and finally, perhaps most importantly, if I win, I’ll make my choice for the Supreme Court not based on a partisan election campaign, but on what prior presidents have done … only after consulting Democrats and Republicans in the United States Senate and seeking their advice and asking for their consent.”

Despite not releasing a list, Biden did pledge to nominate a Black woman to the Supreme Court which would be the first in American history. Biden previously had announced early on in his campaign that his vice-presidential nominee would be a female. He stayed true to his word by selecting Sen. Kamala Harris of California.

The former vice president also suggested that if President Donald Trump moves forward with a nomination to replace the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg before the election, but loses reelection, that his nomination should be withdrawn.

“Voters have already begun casting their votes — in the millions,” he said. “And in just a few weeks we’re going to know who the voters of this nation have chosen as the next president. The United States Constitution was designed to give voters one chance, one chance to have their voice heard on who serves on the court.”

White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany criticized Biden for not releasing a list of possible nominees.

“Where is the Harris-Biden ticket’s Supreme Court list? America deserves to know the radicals they would put on the bench to destroy the 1st & 2nd Amendment and the entire Constitution,” she tweeted.

Trump has also been critical of Biden’s choice not to release a list saying that it’s because none of his radical nominees would win the approval of the American people.
