Cindy McCain endorses Joe Biden
The wife of the late, former U.S. Sen. John McCain (R) is throwing her support behind Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden, citing President Trump’s alleged remarks about members of the military that were first reported by The Atlantic.
“Maybe I shouldn’t say it but I’m about to go on one of these Zooms with John McCain’s wife, who is — first time ever — is endorsing me because of what he talks about with my son and John’s who are heroes, who served their country, you know he said they’re losers, they’re suckers,” Biden said at a fundraiser on Tuesday.
According to the article in The Atlantic, Trump criticized military members on numerous occasions and even referred to American war dead as “losers.” The president has denied ever making the comments and many close to the administration also dispute the claims.
“My husband John lived by a code: country first. We are Republicans, yes, but Americans foremost. There’s only one candidate in this race who stands up for our values as a nation, and that is @JoeBiden,” McCain tweeted Tuesday.
McCain’s endorsement isn’t all that surprising. She unofficially endorsed Biden during a video at the Democratic National Convention along with other Republicans including former Ohio Gov. John Kasich.
“It was a friendship that shouldn’t have worked,” McCain says in the video before talking about the relationship her husband shared with Biden.
McCain and her daughter Meghan, who co-hosts ABC’S “The View,” have been longtime outspoken critics of President Trump. Sen. McCain was a frequent target of Trump. In 2015, then-candidate Trump said McCain wasn’t a hero because he was a prisoner of war.
“He was captured. I like people who weren’t captured,” Trump said at the time.
Sen. McCain later betrayed Trump by voting against repealing President Obama’s health care law. The late senator made a specific request that Trump not be invited to his funeral before he passed away in 2018 from cancer.
Biden has been extremely close to the McCains and has been a big support to the family since he lost his son Beau in 2015 to the same type of cancer.
