Ohio woman tasered, arrested for not wearing mask at junior high football game
An Ohio woman who refused to wear a mask outside at a middle school football game was tasered and then arrested for violating the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s and the athletic facility’s policies on masking.
“During a middle school football game held at the Logan-Hocking Local School District on the evening of September 23, 2020, an attendee was asked to comply with the Ohio High School Athletic Association’s and the athletic facility’s policies,” the district’s superintendent Monte Bainter told NBC News in a statement. “The attendee refused to do so and consequently was asked to leave by the attending law enforcement officer. After resisting the request to exit the premises, the individual was apprehended at the discretion of the attending law enforcement officer.”
Video shows the woman, Alecia Kitts, arguing with the school’s resource officer, who continues to ask her to leave the facility, while junior high school assistant principal Adam Twiss stands by.
The officer tries to arrest Kitts, placing her hands by her back and handcuffing her while Kitts says, “Get off of me! I will not put my hands behind my back. I’m not criminally doing nothing wrong!”
The officer subsequently tasered the woman and then removed her from the stadium in handcuffs accompanied by Twiss and a late-arriving female officer.
Kitts was charged with criminal trespassing for refusing to leave the stadium after being ordered out by the officer for refusing to wear a mask. Kitts claimed that she has asthma and can’t wear a mask.
One school board member from the visiting team’s city was shocked by the actions of the school and the officer.
“It escalated pretty fast into an ugly situation, he tased her pretty fast,” said Board Member Doug Mallett, a member of the visiting team’s school district. “I didn’t see where she was putting anybody at risk, I guess that’s a [school] rule. It depends on interpretation, it’s a state rule, but I thought there was some wiggle room if you have health issues. I tried to stay out of it until he got the taser out,” reports the local Marietta Times.
The police stated that Kitts was not tased over the mask, but for failure to leave … because she wouldn’t wear a mask.
“It is important to note, the female was not arrested for failing to wear a mask, she was asked to leave the premises for continually violating school policy [on wearing a mask]. Once she refused to leave the premises, she was advised she was under arrest for criminal trespassing, she resisted the arrest, which led to the use of force,” says a statement by the police.
