Obama says people are working to suppress Black vote in election
Former President Barack Obama sat down with “The Shade Room,” a popular Black Celebrity social media account and website, where he encouraged people to vote early. The former president then went on to accuse people of working to suppress the votes of people of color.
“As you know the election is coming up and I’ve got just one word for you…vote,” Obama says. “Actually, I’ve got two words…vote early!”
Without naming him personally, Obama implied that President Donald Trump was working to keep people of color from voting in November.
“Right now, from the White House on down, folks are working to keep people from voting, especially communities of color,” he said.
Obama cited the importance of this election as the reason why The White House is allegedly trying to suppress votes. He mentioned racial justice and the coronavirus pandemic response as two of the leading issues facing the country.
“It’s more important than ever to make your voice heard. We can’t leave anything to chance,” he said. “Now is the time to fight for what we believe in. Let’s go out and win this thing.”
Democratic Vice-Presidential Nominee Kamala Harris also launched a new campaign video with the same message. Her video was released on The Young, Black and Fabulous, another Black celebrity news site.
“We are coming down to the wire in this election,” she says. “We know it’s all on the line, everything from women’s health to our jobs, from Black businesses to the quality of our schools and our communities.”
Harris says that to make progress on these issues Americans must vote and vote early.
“This year it is easier and more convenient to make your voice heard on your schedule,” she said. “If you are voting by mail, get that ballot in as soon as possible either by mailing it in or dropping it off in person.”
During the debate on Tuesday, Trump said he’s counting on the Supreme Court looking at the election ballots.
“You either do a solicited ballot or you go and vote. Ballots are being sold, they are being dumped in rivers. This is not going to end well,” Trump said.
