Pelosi moving forward with bill on 25th Amendment, questions Trump’s health
Speaker Nancy Pelosi is moving forward with legislation that would create a commission allowing Congress to remove a president from office, using the 25th Amendment.
“This is not about President Trump,” Pelosi said on Friday. “He will face the judgment of the voters. But he shows the need for us to create a process for future presidents.”
Pelosi publicly stated on Thursday that she planned to discuss the 25th Amendment. Pelosi said she had serious concerns about the president’s health.
The 25th Amendment allows the vice president to become acting president if he and the cabinet or body created by Congress determines the president “is unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
The bill would have to be passed by both the House and the Senate before being signed by the president. It establishes a 17-member bipartisan commission that would work with the vice president to determine whether the president is “unable to discharge the powers and duties of his office.”
Pelosi said the public deserves to know the real status of the president’s health including when his last negative COVID-19 test was prior to his positive results.
“I think that the public needs to know the health condition of the President,” Pelosi said. “There’s one question that he refused to answer. When was his last negative test? Let us see a date, a time when you last tested negative.”
The Speaker questioned why the White House isn’t sharing that important fact with the public when it’s relevant to how the Executive Mansion became a hot spot for COVID.
The president tweeted about Pelosi on Thursday.
“Crazy Nancy is the one who should be under observation,” he said. “They don’t call her Crazy for nothing!”
Republicans on Capitol Hill were not surprised by Pelosi’s comments. Tennessee Congressman Mark Green said this is just the next step in her attempts to remove Trump from office after failing to impeach him.
“I wouldn’t put it past @SpeakerPelosi to stage a coup. She has already weaponized impeachment, what’s to keep her from weaponizing the 25th amendment? We need a new Speaker,” the congressman wrote on Twitter.
The president’s son, Eric, found Pelosi’s comments humorous.
“The person who is third in line to the nuclear codes but was ‘setup’ by her hair salon wants to have a conversation about the 25th amendment… Good one,” he tweeted.
The president on Friday tweeted that his is just an attempt by Pelosi to make Kamala Harris president.
“Crazy Nancy Pelosi is looking at the 25th Amendment in order to replace Joe Biden with Kamala Harris. The Dems want that to happen fast because Sleepy Joe is out of it,” Trump tweeted.
Vice President Mike Pence would need to sign off on any decision to use the 25th Amendment which is extremely unlikely. Trump’s physicians cleared him to return to normal activity this weekend and say he’s in fine health.
