Pelosi and CNN’s Blitzer fight on COVID relief in rare moment of Democrat disagreement
Democrat House Speaker Nancy Pelosi scolded President Trump and CNN Host Wolf Blitzer after Blitzer questioned why Pelosi wouldn’t offer COVID relief to American workers by agreeing to a $1.8 trillion aid package that was put forth by Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin on Friday.
“It is unfortunate that we do not have shared values with this White House,” Pelosi said during a contentious interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer according to Fox News. “I have every confidence in the arguments that we make because it’s based on science and documentation.”
She then said that Blitzer was “an apologist” for Republicans.
Pelosi was visibly frustrated by being questioned both by the media and by Democrat insiders. It’s not often that TV media breaks the Democrat Party discipline and openly questions the leadership of the party.
“I hope you’ll ask the same question of the Republicans on why they don’t want to meet the needs of the American people,” Pelosi responded to Blitzer. “But let me say to those people [in the Democrat party who question her] because all of my colleagues — we represent these people … and their needs are not addressed in the president’s proposal. So when you say to me, ‘Why don’t you accept theirs?’ Why don’t they accept ours?”
It also revealed how closely Blitzer identifies with Democrats, arguing for what he thinks is best for the party.
“People in need can’t wait until February. $1.8 trillion is significant & more than twice the Obama stimulus,” said Blitzer.
“Make a deal & put the ball in McConnell’s court,” Blitzer added, implying it was better for McConnell to fail to get the deal done in the Republican-controlled Senate than it was for Democrats to look like they were stonewalling COVID relief.
Pelosi is likely just trying to deny a victory to President Trump as voting starts across the country. The risk, as Blitzer and others see it, is that Pelosi will be blamed by Americans for stalling COVID relief just to spite Trump.
Trump also has opposition in the Senate by Republicans who want to see a trimmed down COVID relief package that offers more money for the Paycheck Protection Program that will benefit small businesses.
“STIMULUS! Go big or go home!!!” Trump tweeted simply.
Trump is confident that despite GOP grumbling in the Senate that he can get the senior chamber on board if he can get Pelosi to agree.
“I believe Senate Republicans would ultimately come along with what the president wants,” White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany said.
It’s an election year after all, and it’s better for the Senate to put a few chickens in the pot than it is to make people go hungry.
