Trump says he’s ready to sign fourth COVID relief bill when Pelosi wants to make a deal
President Donald Trump told NBC’s Savannah Guthrie that he’s ready to sign a fourth coronavirus relief bill but that Speaker Nancy Pelosi is standing in the way. Trump made the comments during a live NBC town hall on Thursday.
“You know who I am negotiating against? Nancy Pelosi. She doesn’t want to give the money,” Trump said. “This is not our people’s fault. This is China’s fault.”
The president told viewers that he is “ready to sign a big beautiful stimulus.”
“I want it to be big, I want it to be bold,” he said.
Guthrie asked the president if he really thought that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell and Senate Republicans would support a fourth aid package. The president said he has no concerns that they wouldn’t support him.
“They’ll go,” Trump said. “I haven’t asked them to because I can’t get through Nancy Pelosi. If Nancy Pelosi and I, if we agree with something, the Republicans will agree to it.”
McConnell, however, painted a different picture earlier on Thursday when asked about the president’s hopes for a big aid package. He said his Republican colleagues wouldn’t support it. Instead, he said that the previous plan laid out by Senate Republicans was the right direction to take.
“That’s not what I’m going to put on the floor,” McConnell said. “My members think what we laid out, a half a trillion dollars, highly targeted, is the best way to go.”
Democrat senators have been pointing fingers at Trump and Senate Republicans this week for holding a Supreme Court confirmation hearing instead of prioritizing coronavirus relief for Americans.
“To everyone who is barely hanging onto their homes, who has lost a loved one to COVID-19, who has no way to pay the bills: know that instead of voting to provide relief you desperately need, Senate Republicans today are choosing to hold a hearing to confirm a judge,” tweeted Sen. Kamala Harris, the Democratic vice-presidential nominee.
So far Pelosi has been refusing to budge on the House’s wish list for a coronavirus relief bill but many moderate House members are starting to lose their patience. Pelosi may have to make some sacrifices if she wants to ensure some of her members win reelection in swing states.
Trump has already pledged to sign certain portions of a relief bill if they are sent to his desk separately, such as an additional round of stimulus checks to Americans.
While millions of Americans suffer, the ball appears to truly be in Pelosi’s court.
