Ted Cruz shreds ‘bizarre’ Brennan for labeling assassination of Iranian nuke scientist ‘terrorism’

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) brutally slammed former CIA director John Brennan, calling it “bizarre” that Brennan labeled the assassination of Mohsen Fakhrizadeh an act of “state-sponsored terrorism.” Iran’s top nuclear scientist was assassinated on Friday just outside of Tehran. Rumors have been swirling that President Trump plans to hit Iran’s nuclear facilities. Israel is preparing for the action… just in case.

“It’s bizarre to see a former head of the CIA consistently side with Iranian zealots who chant ‘Death to America.’ And reflexively condemn Israel,” Cruz tweeted Friday afternoon, in response to Brennan’s earlier thread where he called the assassination “highly reckless.”

“Does Joe Biden agree?” Cruz asked Brennan.

This did not sit well with the ex-CIA director who is known for his temper and voicing it on social media.

Brennan shot back at Cruz Friday evening, claiming that Cruz had mischaracterized his remarks. He also bitingly added that Cruz has a “lawless attitude & simple-minded approach to serious national security matters.”

“It is typical for you to mischaracterize my comment. Your lawless attitude & simple-minded approach to serious national security matters demonstrate that you are unworthy to represent the good people of Texas,” the former CIA director stated.

Mohsen Fakhrizadeh was slain Friday when a gunman ambushed him in his car near Tehran. Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei vowed revenge on Saturday and pledged to continue the work of the man some called Iran’s Oppenheimer. Fakhrizadeh, an officer in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, was named as the director of Iran’s nuclear weapons project in 2018.

Iran has vowed to retaliate, with supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei saying in a Twitter post that Iranian officials would be “pursuing this crime and punishing its perpetrators and those who commanded it.”

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani said that the Islamic republic “will respond in time to the assassination of Martyr Fakhrizadeh.”

“Once again, the evil hands of Global Arrogance and the Zionist mercenaries were stained with the blood of an Iranian son,” he said allegedly blaming Israel for the attack.

“This was a criminal act & highly reckless,” tweeted Brennan, who ran the CIA under President Obama from 2013-2017. “It risks lethal retaliation & a new round of regional conflict.”

“Iranian leaders would be wise to wait for the return of responsible American leadership on the global stage & to resist the urge to respond against perceived culprits,” Brennan tweeted on Friday, suggesting that Tehran wait for President-elect Joe Biden to take office.

Brennan stated that he didn’t know whether a foreign government authorized or carried out the slaying, but said, “Such an act of state-sponsored terrorism would be a flagrant violation of international law & encourage more governments to carry out lethal attacks against foreign officials.”

He then went on to say that assassinations are “far different than strikes against terrorist leaders & operatives of groups like al-Qaida & Islamic State, which are not sovereign states. As illegitimate combatants under international law, they can be targeted in order to stop deadly terrorist attacks.”

Brennan also clapped back at Cruz saying that he should not be making public statements, claiming that as a private citizen, his comments were freedom of speech. “My commitment to Israel’s security & my efforts to counter Iran’s malign activities are well documented throughout my 33 years of national security work serving Republican & Democratic Administrations. Aside from his tiresome rhetoric, what has Senator Cruz ever done?”
