Fauci NOW says to ‘keep the schools open’ and triggers massive anger online

Amidst a COVID-19 surge that he claims could get worse, Dr. Anthony Fauci has nonetheless reaffirmed that schools should stay open or reopen with appropriate safety protocols because kids are at low risk for the spread of the virus. Bars and restaurants should be shuttered, he insisted, however.

“The default position should be to try as best as possible within reason to keep children in school, to get them back to school,” he said on ABC’s This Week program on Sunday. In response, U.S. Sen. Rand Paul (R.– Ky.) took to Twitter to imply that it is about time.

The director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases was responding to a question from anchor Martha Raddatz (sitting in for George Stephanopoulos) about how he would advise, as she put it, the incoming Biden administration on a unified response, particularly since New York City has shut down its school system (a decision subsequently reversed at least for elementary school children).

Even Fauci, who spends a lot of his time doing TV interviews that could be devoted to looking through a microscope, studying additional data, or interacting with patients, conceded that one size does not fit all. This is an admission rarely articulated by public health officials during the pandemic at a time when many contradictory statements have emerged.

“Close the bars and keep the schools open is what we really say.  Obviously, you don’t have one size fits all. But as I said in the past and as you accurately quoted me, the default position should be to try as best as possible within reason to keep children in school, to get them back to school. The best way to ensure the safety of the children in school is to get the community level of spread low. So, if you mitigate the things that you know are causing spread in a very, very profound way, in a robust way, if you bring that down, you will then indirectly and ultimately protect the children in the school because the community level is determined how things go across the board. So my feeling would be the same thing,” Dr. Fauci explained.

“If you look at the data, the spread among children and from children is not really very big at all, not like one would have suspected. So let’s try to get the kids back, but let’s try to mitigate the things that maintain and just push the kind of community spread that we’re trying to avoid. And those are the things that you know well. The bars, the restaurants where you have capacity seating indoors without masks; those are the things that drive the community spread, not the schools.”

Rand Paul, a medical doctor whose specialty is ophthalmology, has engaged in public disagreements with Fauci over COVID policy.

The senator took to Twitter to recall that he championed back-to-school efforts and claimed that Fauci should apologize to parents and school-age children for apparently during lockdown scenarios suggesting otherwise.

While Fauci still garners respect in some or many quarters, non-Fauci fans, including additional well-known influencers, weighed in on Twitter. Here is sample:
