While COVID-19 has swept the planet and has devastated the lives of millions not only healthwise but financially, it has also created billionaires in 2020. Forbes just recently listed 50 doctors, scientists, and healthcare entrepreneurs who have cashed-in on the pandemic. Sickness and death are big business. 28 of those billionaires are Chinese.

The virus first came to light in December of 2019 in Wuhan, China, and the race was on. It quickly spread across the planet and has allegedly killed more than 1.7 million people. Reports estimate that more than 18 million in the U.S. are infected and approximately 332,723 have perished from the virus.

The healthcare industry boomed even with personnel being furloughed because of lockdowns. Telehealth became the new norm and appears to be here to stay. Pharmaceutical firms began feverishly developing vaccines and in the process made a number of individuals very wealthy. Moderna and Pfizer have both made good on their promises to create a vaccine for the virus by the end of 2020 and their bottom lines will be impressive.

50 doctors, scientists, and healthcare entrepreneurs are tied to these medical breakthroughs. They have each graduated to billionaire status this year, according to Forbes.

The most high-profile billionaires of this elite club are Uğur Şahin, the physician who co-founded BioNTech, which helped develop the Pfizer vaccine, and Stéphane Bancel, the CEO of Massachusetts-based Moderna.

Sahin is standing at $4.2 billion since January and Bancel has just topped $4.1 billion in worth.

Sahin’s BioNTech’s stock has increased by 160 percent since partnering with Pfizer to develop one of the vaccines.

Bancel is from France and became Moderna’s CEO in 2011. He hit billionaire status in March after selling more than a million shares as the firm’s stock surged by more than 550 percent.

Another to hit the big time is Yuan Liping, whose net worth skyrocketed to $4.1 billion after her divorce from Du Weimin in June. She owns 24 percent of Shenzhen Kangtai Biological Products. They produce vaccines. Yuan proceeded to become Canada’s richest woman following their divorce.

Hu Kun chairs China’s Contec Medical Systems. He became a billionaire this year with a net worth of $3.9 billion. His company makes medical products for hospitals which include, nebulizers, stethoscopes, and blood pressure monitors.

Carl Hansen is a Canadian and is now worth $2.9 billion as the CEO and co-founder of AbCellera. It is a biotech firm that uses artificial intelligence to identify promising antibody treatments for diseases.

Timothy Springer has a net worth of $2 billion. He was a founding investor in Moderna in 2010 when he put $5 million into the company. Springer has a 3.5 percent stake in Moderna. He’s worth a cool $1.6 billion.

Sergio Stevanato has a net worth of $1.8 billion as the president of Italian medical packaging firm Stevanato Group, the world’s second-largest producer of glass vials. His company is a prominent supplier of vials for more than 40 COVID-19 vaccines.
