A man fatally shot himself outside of a Republican Congresswoman’s home in Irving, Texas, police said Wednesday afternoon, an NBC affiliate reported.
An unidentified man was found dead with a self-inflicted gunshot wound on the sidewalk outside of Rep. Beth Van Duyne’s home, according to police, NBC DFW reported. Van Duyne was home at the time of the incident and called the police, a spokesperson for her office said.
“She is shocked and saddened that someone would take their own life. We have no further comment at this time,” the spokesperson said, NBC DFW reported.

The incident occurred inside a gated community and it is unclear whether the unidentified man and Van Duyne knew each other, NBC DFW reported. There were other people inside the home with Van Duyne who heard the gunshot and saw the man lying on the sidewalk.
Law enforcement is waiting for a medical examiner to identify the man, according to NBC DFW. Officials said there are no known active threats concerning Van Duyne or others, and that the reason behind the man’s apparent suicide was unclear.
Around 25% of young adults between the ages of 18 and 24 have considered suicide and 40% said their mental health has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Neither the Irving Police Department or Van Duyne responded to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.
