Houston carjacker steals car with toddler inside, kills dad and leaves child to die of heat exhaustion

Houston police have arrested a carjacker who allegedly shot a father to death, then stole his car with his toddler son inside, eventually ditching the vehicle and leaving the child to die of heat exhaustion.

The 38-year-old suspect will reportedly be charged with murder and tampering with evidence, according to Houston police. His identity has not been revealed yet but when charges are filed it will be released to the public. He was originally detained for questioning in the matter and then arrested.

The Houston Police Department received a call at approximately 1:46 p.m. on Tuesday concerning the shooting, according to ABC News. Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite stated that officers found a 38-year-old man who had been shot to death when they arrived on the scene near the corner of El Camino Del Rey Street and Chimney Rock Road in west Houston.

At approximately 6:30 p.m. that evening, a distraught woman called the police claiming her husband and two-year-old son were missing. At that point, it was determined the man who was shot to death earlier during the carjacking was her husband. The police did not know a child was involved.

“We never knew about the child until she called,” Houston Police Executive Assistant Chief Larry Satterwhite told reporters in a briefing.

Police frantically searched for the vehicle and finally found it over ten miles from the scene of the crime. The little boy was locked inside and was unresponsive. Officers broke the windows and performed CPR on the boy while calling an ambulance but it was too late.

“Sadly, it was too late. The child had passed in the car,” Satterwhite commented according to the Daily Mail.

“At this time, we don’t know why or how or what the cause of death will be. It could be something like heat exhaustion, we just don’t know. That will be determined later through autopsy. It’s the hardest thing we do,” he sadly remarked. “Children are innocent.”

“Pray for this family,” Satterwhite said. “A mother lost her husband and she lost her 2-year-old child today.”

It’s believed that the carjacker left the car where it was found and locked the child inside in the backseat with no regard for the child surviving the summer heat.

Police believe the altercation occurred when the victim met with the suspect and an argument ensued. They contend that the suspect pulled a gun and shot the victim multiple times before taking off with his black SUV and fleeing the scene.

A black man wearing black shorts, a white t-shirt, and an Oakland Raiders baseball cap who is believed to be the suspect can be seen in surveillance footage walking into a convenience store as if nothing had transpired.

Carjacking has become a scourge in Houston and many times turns deadly. It occurs there day and night and everyone living there is at risk over it.

This is one more incident where an innocent child paid the ultimate price as crime runs rampant in the democratically-controlled city with no end in sight.
